Shelley Abramson and Carolyn Melman, Torah Fund and Women’s League VPs
Our Sisterhood is a member of the Pacific Southwest Region of the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, a branch of the United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism, and the largest synagogue based women’s organization in the world. Women’s League supports Torah Fund, which provides scholarships to educate Conservative Rabbis, Cantors, and educators.
Women’s League Torah Fund
Sisterhood is launching the 2011-2012 annual Torah Fund Campaign of the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism. Torah Fund directly supports the education of rabbis, cantors, teachers, and lay leaders at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem and the Seminario Rabinico Latino Americano in Bueno Aires. The graduates of these schools continually enrich the quality of our lives as Conservative Jews.
The theme for the 2011-2012 campaign is “Hiddur Mitzvah,” embellishing and beautifying our Jewish world. This theme resonates with many Jewish women, particularly those who have been involved in artistic activities. Whether they used their artistic skills to decorate the woven curtains for the Ark or Torah mantles in 17th century Italy and Prague or were crafters in 20th century women’s groups, women continue to be committed to this most ancient of Jewish values.
The pomegranate imagery of the year’s Torah Fund pin has a multilayered meaning. In addition to being beautiful, pomegranates (rimmonim) are one of the bountiful fruits of Israel. Rimmonim is also the term used for the silver adornments on the atzei chaim (Torah) rollers ) or the Sefer Torah (Torah scroll) – just a little something that has adorned our Land, our Torah, our rituals, and our mitzvot for cxenturies, and has added meaning to our daily lives.
Giving tzedakah is a mitzvah, and by giving to Torah Fund you are fulfilling a mitzvah while providing funds for the continuation of our heritage.
In recognition of your generous support of a gift of $180 or more to the Torah Fund campaign, you will receive the beautiful gold and silver pin. Of course, a donation of any amount is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your pledge to insure the future of Judaism. You may pay online or send your check to the synagogue office, marked “Sisterhood Torah Fund.”
